PBA: With Magnolia struggling, Mark Barroca wary of long break
MANILA, Philippines—While most look forward to the holiday break, Mark Barroca expressed his concern over the possible consequences of the hiatus that could greatly affect the struggling Magnolia Hotshots.

After another loss–a 95-92 heartbreak at the hands of rival Ginebra on Christmas Day–Magnolia won’t play again until January 10.

“This break is actually scary because we’ll go back in the 10th [of January]. We have a Christmas and New Year’s break so some of us may be out of shape and may get rusty,” said the veteran guard in Filipino.

“It’s a bit scary, especially for us because we’re in trouble so we might lose our sense of urgency.”

The defeat was the Hotshots’ fifth in seven outings good for only ninth in the standings.

Barroca was one of the few bright spots for the Hotshots against the Gin Kings, tallying 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The 38-year-old Barroca said keeping focus and staying in shape amid the extended break will be vital for Magnolia when the conference resumes.

“As professionals, we have to know what to do with our bodies and take care of it so when it comes to the games, we’ll still be sharp.”
