Petro Gazz taps American import Gia Day for AVC Champions League

MANILA, Philippines — Petro Gazz is bringing a formidable wing spiker rotation in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League, tapping American outside hitter Gia Day as its reinforcement.

The newly-crowned PVL All-Filipino Conference champion on Maundy Thursday unveiled its import for the Asian club tournament from April 20 to 27 at Philsports Arena.

“Welcome to the Angels family, Gia Day! We’re pumped to have you!” the team wrote.

The 6-foot-2 Day is teaming up with two-time MVP Brooke Van Sickle and veteran wingers Myla Pablo, Jonah Sabete, and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas.

The 26-year-old outside spiker played in prestigious professional leagues in France, Puerto Rico, Italy, Indonesia, and South Korea.

She recently played in the United States pro volleyball leagues, Athletes Unlimited Pro League and LOVB (League One Volleyball).

The US NCAA standout from Baylor Bears was a Best Outside Hitter in the Korean Volleyball League with the Daejeon Jungkwanjang Red Sparks in the 2023-24 season.

Petro Gazz is entitled to tap one foreign player with Filipino-Americans Van Sickle and Finals MVP MJ Phillips still registered with the USA Volleyball federation.

The Angels are looking to translate their success in the PVL, ending the Creamline Cool Smashers’ dynasty in an epic best-of-three Finals series, into a successful international stint in front of their home crowd.
