SCHEDULE: UAAP Season 87 volleyball tournament second round

MANILA, Philippines—Adamson super rookie Shaina Nitura turned in another monster performance, but it still wasn’t enough to lift the Lady Falcons past La Salle in a grueling five-setter in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Despite falling short, Nitura’s brilliance didn’t go unnoticed, especially not by Lady Spikers star Angel Canino.

La Salle came away with a hard-fought 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-4 victory Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena, but Canino took the time to credit Nitura’s incredible play.

“Sobrang galing ng batang ‘yon (that kid is so good),” said Canino. “I have no words for her — she’s unstoppable. Most of our preparations were focused on stopping Nitura.”

Nitura finished with 35–just a few points shy of breaking her own single-game record for most points scored. She set that bar just last month when she scored 38 in a five-set loss to the University of the Philippines.

La Salle tried its best to contain the consensus Rookie of the Year but couldn’t stop–nor slow down–the offensive barrage of Adamson’s “main killer.”

“She’s an all-around player, I love her volleyball IQ and she’s very humble,” Canino said.

Canino held her own with 22 points, helping the defending champions tie UST at 9-4 for second in the standings.
