From sharing the court with fellow National University star Bryan Bagunas in the SEA V.League last year, Buds Buddin finally teamed up with his idol and another face of Philippine men’s volleyball, Marck Espejo, in the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals.
In Espejo’s 30-point outing, Buddin made sure his idol’s effort wouldn’t go to waste. The young gun delivered timely hits in the fifth set before the team captain closed out the match with a back-row attack to seal a 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12 win over Thailand on Independence Day at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Of course, for me, I’m really thankful. Back in the SEA V.League, one of the players I looked up to was Kuya Bryan, and now I get to share the court with Kuya Marck,” said Buddin in Filipino.
Buddin scored most of his five points in the deciding set, including two key kills that pushed the Philippines to match point, 14-11. Espejo then finished the job to complete the sweep of the four-team tournament.
“I’m really happy because this is my first time winning against Thailand. I always try to stay ready since I’m used to situations where I’m just suddenly called to play,” Buddin said.

“During my two seasons in NU, I was injured, so I really had to be patient. When I finally got subbed in, I told myself I had to contribute. It was already a late-game situation, so we had to fight for every point.”
In preparation for the country’s historic hosting and participation in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in September, Buddin said he wants to cherish every moment playing alongside his idols.

“Every time I’m on court with Kuya Marck, I treat it as something memorable. That became my motivation, because I don’t know when the last time we’ll play together might be,” he said. “They’re my inspiration on the court. It’s a dream come true to play alongside Kuya Marck—and to top it off, we beat Thailand. I’m just beyond happy.”
Espejo, who has made his mark in the UAAP, Spikers’ Turf, and overseas, said he’s honored to serve as an inspiration for players like Buddin.
“I’m happy that I get to inspire other people. One of them is Buds. I even gave him my jersey,” said Espejo. “I’m glad to know that in some way, I’ve inspired others in volleyball. Hopefully, more young players out there will start considering men’s volleyball as a serious sport here in the Philippines. I really hope I get to witness that growth myself.”
Espejo also urged fans to continue supporting the men’s team as it gears up for the 32-nation World Championship.
“We all know that here in the Philippines, women’s volleyball usually gets more attention. But now, men’s volleyball is really starting to rise and it’s not just because of us—it’s also because of the fans who continue to support us,” said the five-time UAAP MVP. “With the upcoming World Championships, we’re really hoping for your full support. Thank you so much. Win or lose, it’s always a victory for the Philippines.”
