MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala set a new career-high world ranking of No. 56 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) following her runner-up finish in the Lexus Eastbourne Open.
Eala, who leaped 18 spots from 74th, made Philippine tennis history with her first WTA tour final appearance.

She shattered her previous high of No. 69 on the heels of her Miami Open breakthrough last May.
The Filipino tennis sensation fell short to Maya Joint of Australia, 4-6, 6-1, 6(10)-7, in a gripping WTA 250 final on Saturday night.

The Rafa Nadal Academy standout reached the championship round despite entering the tournament as a qualifier.
Eala makes her second women’s Grand Slam main draw appearance at Wimbledon on Tuesday against defending champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic.
