Carlo Biado and young Bernie Regalario arranged an all-Filipino clash in the semifinals of the World Pool Championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Biado beat compatriot Jeffrey Ignacio, 11-9, in the round-of-16 before defeating Chinese-Taipei’s Ko Ping Chung, 11-7, in the quarterfinals to move two wins shy of repeating his 2017 title run.
Regalario, only 20 years old, moved closer toward the biggest achievement of his early pool career with wins over fellow Filipino Patric Gonzales, 11-9, and Spain’s Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, 11-4.
The two will meet Saturday night at Jeddah’s Green Halls for a spot in the final against either defending champion Fedor Gorst, representing the United States, or 19-year-old Kledio Kaci of Albania.
The final, a race-to-15 affair, will be played moments after the two semis matches.
Biado will be aiming for a third final in the prestigious 9-ball competition, his last appearance ending with a loss to Germany’s Joshua Filler in 2018 that denied his bid for back-to-back titles.
His 2017 championship was also the last time a Filipino ruled the event that was also won by Efren “Bata” Reyes (1999), Ronnie Alcano (2006) and Francisco “Django” Bustamante (2010).
Both Biado and Regalario are assured of taking home $50,000 (P2.86 million) each, but are eyeing a bigger purse when the two square off in the pool table.
The champion gets $250,000 (P14.29 million) while the runner-up will settle for $100,000 (P5.71 million).
