MANILA, Philippines—La Salle opened its title defense in the World University Basketball Series (WUBS) on a winning note.
The Green Archers overcame Chinese Taipei’s National Chengchi University, 89-84, on Saturday at Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.
La Salle will face either Hong Kong University or Japan University’s Select Team next.
Mike Phillips led the way for the Green Archers with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Mason Amos backstopped Phillips with 14 points while Luis Pablo also hit double digits with 11.
The Green Archers, who blew a double-digit lead, overcame NCCU’s troika of Wu Zhikai, Sung Hsinhao and Hsu Techi, who combined for 58 points.
Wu topscored with 21 while Sung and Hsu added 20 and 17 points, respectively.
La Salle isn’t the only Philippine school to compete in this year’s WUBS with its UAAP rival University of the Philippines also seeing action in the tournament.
The Fighting Maroons, the reigning UAAP champions, clash with Korea University later in the afternoon.
