MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas wasn’t all smiles after successfully advancing to the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup quarterfinals with another man down.
Following their triumphant 95-88 win over Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Gilas coach Tim Cone revealed that CJ Perez was rushed to the hospital with an apparent ankle injury.

“The only bad part of all this is the injury to CJ. Looks like it’s a bad injury,” said Cone. “He’s in the hospital now. We don’t know the extent of it, but it didn’t look good.”
Perez had to be helped out of the playing court after suffering an awkward fall at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter. Only having played a minute, Perez wasn’t able to log in any numbers for Gilas Pilipinas.

When asked about what exactly the San Miguel Beer star’s injury was, Cone stated that he’s as lost as everybody else.
“I’m not going to pretend to be a doctor and tell you what it is but it was not a good injury. Our prayers are with him,” he said.
Perez’s injury is just one of the latest for Gilas Pilipinas.
For starters, Gilas already didn’t have its main big man in Kai Sotto while Calvin Oftana re-aggravated his sprained ankle in the Philippines’ last game against Iraq.
Automatically, Perez will be listed as day-to-day for Gilas’ quarterfinals clash with Australia on Wednesday, 7pm.
