FILE–Godfrey Okumu has been named the new Galeries Tower HighRisers coach in the PVL.
MANILA, Philippines — Galeries Tower has promoted longtime deputy Godfrey Okumu as its new head coach in the PVL after Lerma Giron’s departure.
Hours after announcing Giron’s exit as the first Galeries coach since it joined the league in 2023, the HighRisers revealed the Kenyan coach as the new shot caller for their young squad.
“A familiar face. A trusted leader. Coach Godfrey Okumu returns to guide the Highrisers as Head Coach! The grind starts now,” wrote the team.
Galeries was handled by Giron, part of the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses coaching staff and ex-Adamson head coach, since it joined the PVL in 2023.
Okumu has been part of Giron’s coaching staff since then.
The 57-year-old Kenyan, a former University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons mentor, returns as club head coach since his stint with the defunct Motolite in 2019.
Okumu will inherit a squad led by 2025 PVL Rookie Draft second overall pick, Jean Asis, Alas Pilipinas setter Julia Coronel, Jewel Encarnacion, France Ronquillo, and Ysa Jimenez.
The High Risers had losing records in their first four conferences, but in the previous 2024-25 All-Filipino, they pulled off an upset against the No.3 Cignal in the qualifying round for an outright quarterfinal berth.
Geleries lost all six games in the PVL on Tour.
