MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala bombed out in the first round of the Oeiras Ladies Open doubles in Portugal on Wednesday (Manila time).
Her first doubles stint since her dream run in the Miami Open ended with an early exit as Eala and Katie Volynets got swept by fourth-seeded Americans Christina Rosca and Carmen Corley, 3-6, 4-6.
Eala teamed up with Volynets, whom she took down in the Miami Open round of 128 before beating three Grand Slam champions to enter the semifinal.

From 2-all in the opening set, Rosca and Corley found their groove to get the better of the Filipino-American tandem and take the opening set.
The pair from the United States brought the momentum with a 3-0 start in the second set before Eala and Volynets won two consecutive games to cut the deficit to one.
However, Rosca and Corley got their act together for a 4-2 lead before Eala and Volynets bounced back in the seventh game to keep them within striking distance.

They blanked each other in the next two games as the US-Philippines duo maintained a one-point deficit, 5-4, but the Americans dominated the 10th game to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Women’s Tennis Association 125 doubles.
The Filipino prodigy lost her second straight doubles this year after a first-round exit with Tsao Chia-yi in the WTA 125 Mumbai last February in India.
World No. 72 Eala, currently the No.1 seed in the tournament, continues her singles campaign against Hungarian Panna Udvardy on Thursday (Manila time).
The Rafa Nadal Academy graduate swept Anouk Koevermans of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-4, in the rain-delayed match to reach the Round of 16, winning her first game on clay this season and as a top 75 player in the world.
