At one point during the launch of their new sporting venture, sisters Milka and Mandy Romero reminded everyone that on this particular day last year, they made the Capital1 Solar Spikers part of the Premier Volleyball League.

It has been a wonderful experience for the Romero siblings, with the team notching franchise milestones. But it has also been challenging, with the Capital1 facing the same growth pains new clubs normally go through.

“It takes time to build a team’s chemistry,” Mandy Romero said.

The newest project, however, may prove to be different.

On Wednesday, the sisters unveiled the Capital1 Solar Strikers, the newest team competing in the Philippine Football Federation Women’s League.

“We’ve seen the growth of women’s sports in the country and we want to push that and let others experience what my sister and I did as players,” Milka Romero said during the team’s unveiling at Out Of Office bar in Taguig City, which was also attended by PFF president John Gutierrez. “If we can help one woman or one girl achieve her dream in sports, then we did our job.”

And the Solar Strikers are looking forward to some early success despite being league newbies.

“We expect to start strong, especially with coach Let (Dimzon) and with a lot of great players on the team,” Mandy added.

Dimzon, who will have a cast that includes seasoned players, overseas talent and products from collegiate powerhouse programs like La Salle and Far Eastern U, expects the team to be competitive.

“We just have to get everybody fit,” Dimzon said. “Then, of course, learn our system. With the experience of my players, I think we’re ready to compete against the likes of Kaya and Stallion.”
