September will be a busy month for EJ Obiena.
The Filipino pole vault star is set to host a pole vault event at Ayala Triangle Gardens, where he will compete against top-notch opposition.
Obiena, ranked No. 5 in the world, will battle the likes of world No. 7 and fellow Olympian Menno Vloon, world No. 14 Austin Miller of the United States, and another American in world No. 25 Matthew Ludwig in the event dubbed “Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge” this Sept. 20 and Sept. 21.
The event is arguably the biggest pole vault contest to happen in the country.
And Obiena will try to build momentum going into his hosting when he competes in the World Athletics Continental Tour in Beijing, China on Sept. 7. After that, the former University of Santo Tomas standout will be in Tokyo, Japan, for the annual World Athletics Championships.
“Already meeting the qualifying standard since last year, the World Championships silver medalist is once again ready to soar on the global stage,” wrote the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (Patafa) in a Facebook post.
Obiena finished with a historic bronze in the 2022 edition of the global competition and then bettered himself by grabbing silver the following year.
