Chris Ross came to the defense of San Miguel Beer teammate June Mar Fajardo following the star center’s struggles in Gilas Pilipinas’ 95-87 loss to Chinese-Taipei in the Fiba Asia Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

When a netizen on X, the social media app formerly known as Twitter, called Fajardo a “complete joke” when it comes to playing on the international level, Ross didn’t hesitate to clap back, citing the way things are run under coach Tim Cone’s system.

“June [Mar] isn’t the focal point of the offense. Playing in the triangle before during Asian Games the offense is catered around JB [Justin Brownlee],” Ross said.

Ross also cited Fajardo’s calf injury that has bothered him since the Beermen’s run to the PBA Philippine Cup title, adding that the 6-foot-10 center has been spending the off days trying to heal up instead of taking part in practices.

“Another thing, June [Mar] hasn’t practiced since game one of the semis trying to manage his injury. Only if y’all knew what he’s doing just to get on court,” Ross concluded.

Fajardo drew criticisms from fans after putting up just two points and two rebounds plus turning the ball over three times as Gilas dropped its opening assignment in the continental tournament.

He also had to deal with the presence of Chinese-Taipei’s naturalized player Brandon Gilbeck, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The eight-time PBA Most Valuable Player and Gilas are eager to bounce back on Wednesday when it takes on New Zealand at Jeddah’s King Abdullah Sports City.
