Gilas Pilipinas exits Fiba Asia Cup after big loss to Australia

Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign in the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup came to an end after being battered by Australia, 84-60, in their quarterfinal match on Wednesday at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Philippines didn’t have answers to Australia’s torrid shooting to start the game, which set the tone for the lopsided outing that wrapped up what was a rollercoaster for the boys of coach Tim Cone.

HIGHLIGHTS: Gilas Pilipinas vs Australia – 2025 Fiba Asia Cup quarterfinals

Australia connected on seven of its 11 triples in the first quarter from a 29-12 lead that Gilas never recovered from.

Jaylin Galloway, Xavier Cooks and Owen Foxwell provided most of the damage as the Boomers advanced to the semifinals after extending their unbeaten record since making their debut in the continental tournament in 2017 with a 16th consecutive win.

Galloway and Foxwell scored 15 points each while Cooks proved a problem for Gilas with his activity on both ends, finishing with 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

Kevin Quiambao and Dwight Ramos were some of the few, if not the only, bright spots as Gilas couldn’t replicate the determined stand it put in overcoming Saudi Arabia in the qualification game for the quarterfinals.

Quiambao had 17 points on five triples to end a tournament that could benefit him in the long run for Gilas while Ramos posted 15 points and seven rebounds.

Justin Brownlee, whose clutch three-pointer forced overtime against Saudi Arabia, was held in check by the Australian defense and finished with 10 points on 3-of-7 from the field.

Australia jumped to a 13-4 start as Galloway connected on three triples before extending the gap to 24-8 in the same period.
