Unbeaten Gilas Pilipinas Youth looks to finish strong as it faces Indonesia in the gold medal match of the Fiba U16 Asia Cup Seaba Qualifiers on Friday. at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center.
The final is set for 7 p.m.
Both teams have already booked tickets to the 2025 FIBA U16 Asia Cup in Mongolia this July, but bragging rights as the best in Southeast Asia are still up for grabs.
The Philippines edged Indonesia 77-68 in their group stage meeting, pulling away only in the closing minutes. The game was tight throughout, with just four points separating them late in the match.
Indonesia (4-1) earned another shot at the unbeaten hosts after cruising past Vietnam, 74-51, on Thursday.
Gilas (5-0) also rolled past Malaysia, 95-61, but not without early concerns but head coach LA Tenorio saw areas for improvement despite the dominant win.
“Our turnovers (20) — even though we had 27 assists — still concern me,” he said. “Scoring isn’t the problem. It’s about playing within the system.”
Tenorio added that the team is locked in for the final.
“Even at halftime today, we had to remind the players they weren’t playing at a finals level,” he said. “We have to compete at the highest level.”
