Israel Friday, UP recruit, dies at 19

MANILA, Philippines—Israel Osamudiame Friday, a University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons recruit, passed away on Tuesday. He was 19.

Friday collapsed during practice, according to a statement released by the UP Office for Athletics and Development on Wednesday morning.

“He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he passed away.”

The Nigerian center recently transferred to UP from Centro Escolar University, where he starred for the Scorpions in the University and Colleges Athletic League.

“UP is in close contact with his family and is extending its full support during this difficult time,” the statement read.

“The exact cause of his death is still being determined, and the university asks everyone to respect the privacy of his family, as they grieve this tragic loss.”

The 6-foot-10 Friday was about to turn 20 years old on September 6.
