MANILA, Philippines — From being at the forefront of the University of Santo Tomas’ offense in the UAAP, Josh Ybañez has embraced the libero role since representing the country at Alas Pilipinas.
The culmination of his versatile game could come in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship when he defends the floor for the Philippines against world-class talent.

The two-time UAAP MVP, who at first had doubts about himself in returning to his natural role before college, said he is honored by the trust of Italian coach Angiolino Frigoni, which has helped him overcome the pressure.
“Pressure is constant,” said Ybañez in Filipino. “It’s always there, even if it’s not the World Championship. There’s always pressure. So I just embrace it and focus on loving what I do.”
The 5-foot-7 Golden Spiker, who bagged Best Libero honors in the SEA V.League, relishes the chance to be part of the World Championship as he competes for a spot in the Final 14 for the 32-nation tournament set from September 12 to 28 at SM Mall of Asia Arena and Araneta Coliseum.

“It’s an honor for us to represent the Philippines for the first time at the World Championship, and as they say, this is history. I’m happy, and for sure, I’m going to learn so much from our opponents and from the tournament itself,” said Ybañez, who is among the three liberos with Jack Kalingking and Vince Lorenzo.
Ybañez also urged the home crowd to back them when the Philippines opens its campaign against Tunisia at MOA Arena, following a festive opening ceremony headlined by K-pop group BOYNEXTDOOR and Cebuana singer-songwriter-actress Karencitta.
“I will just focus on doing my best in every game and learning from each match. That’s the only way I can grow,” he said.
“I hope all Filipinos will support us, because of course, there are teams like the USA and others that are also favorites among Filipinos. So I hope they cheer for us, too.”
