Coach Tim Cone could only marvel at another Justin Brownlee clutch moment that got Gilas Pilipinas into the quarterfinals of the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup with a 95-88 overtime victory over host Saudi Arabia.

Brownlee’s three-pointer with 3.7 seconds left in regulation enabled Gilas to tie the count at 79-all after all seemed lost when Saudi Arabia went up by six with less than two minutes to go in the fourth before a big crowd at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.

“By all rights, they had the game won, except for the guy on my right hitting the big shot. If you know his history, it’s not unusual,” Cone said during the postgame press conference where he was joined by Brownlee at the podium.

Saudi Arabia coach Ricard Casas later said that the team was supposed to take a quick foul that would have sent Brownlee to the foul line with Gilas in penalty.

But Marzouq Almuwallad opted to try to make a stop, but to no avail, as Brownlee was able to find some space to nail the big triple from almost the left side of the arc.

“The decision was [to] foul, but we didn’t make [a] foul,” the Spanish mentor said.

Brownlee’s latest heroics was the momentum Gilas needed in the extension as Kevin Quiambao knocked down two threes while AJ Edu and Dwight Ramos also made key plays that sealed the deal in what Cone described as an “epic game” for both teams.

Brownlee also scored in overtime on his way to 29 points as the Philippines moved on to the last eight against Australia on Wednesday.

“[His shot] spearheaded us. The momentum and the emotions from that shot propelled us to that overtime,” Cone said.
