KBL: Led by SJ Belangel, Katipunan talents shine over the weekend

MANILA, Philippines—The Korean Basketball League bore witness to UAAP talents from Katipunan having their way over weekend action.

SJ Belangel helped the Daegu KOGAS Pegasus zoom past the Seoul SK Knights, 75-74, at Daegu Gymnasium on Sunday.

Belangel, an Ateneo product, finished with a near double-double of 14 points and eight assists with three steals and two rebounds to match in 33 minutes of action.

To add to Belangel’s splendor, Sunday became the fourth straight game day where he’d score in double digits.

The UAAP champion guard’s efforts helped Daegu rise to a 26-25 card.

Over on the other end, Juan Gomez de Liaño, formerly from University of the Philippines, poured five points and four rebounds in the Seoul loss.

Elsewhere, Carl Tamayo was instrumental in the Changwon LG Sakers’ blowout win over the Busan KCC Egis, 97-72, at Sajik Arena.

Tamayo, a member of the UP championship team of Season 84, helped Changwon’s cause with 19 points and seven rebounds to fuel the LG Sakers to 32-19.

Then, Ethan Alvano went berserk and powered the Wonju DB Promy past the Seoul Samsung Thunders, 85-76.

The reigning KBL Domestic MVP stuffed the stat sheet with 25 points, six assists, four rebounds and a block for good measure to ensure the Wonju dub.

On Monday, Filipino imports continued to shine, this time with former UP guard JD Cagulangan in the Suwon KT Sonicboom’s 88-85 win over the Anyang JKJ Red Boosters.

Cagulangan played an all-around game of 11 points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals for Suwon’s fifth straight victory for a 32-19 slate.

In Anyang’s side, fellow former UP swingman Javi Gomez de Liaño finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
