MANILA, Philippines—With Gilas Pilipinas down two men in a must-win, Kevin Quiambao provided the shot in the arm to escape host Saudi Arabia in overtime and reach the Fiba Asia Cup quarterfinals.

The youngest on the squad, Quiambao played like a wily veteran, delivering big shots and making timely plays.

“We just played the next man up,” said Quiambao in Filipino after Gilas’ 95-88 victory. “We lost two players but we trusted coach Tim’s system and everyone who believed in us.”

Already without forward Calvin Oftana heading into the game due to an ankle injury he sustained in the win over Iraq, Gilas lost guard CJ Perez, who also went down after hurting his ankle in the second quarter just shortly after checking into the game.

The 24-year-old Quiambao was inserted into the game early and quickly made his presence felt en route to a 17-point performance, highlighted by clutch plays. He also contributed three assists and three steals and was a game-high +24 when on the floor.

“We’ll focus on ourselves and what we can improve on,” said the former La Salle standout, who also tallied 17 points in a loss to Chinese Taipei in the group phase.

“We can’t just look ahead to Australia. We know they’re a powerhouse team but we’ll do our best to prepare for our next game.”

Gilas takes on Australia on Wednesday night, 7 p.m. (Manila time).
