Michelle Cobb retires from playing volleyball

MANILA, Philippines —Michelle Cobb is hanging up her volleyball jersey after being one of the Akari Chargers’ pioneering players in the PVL.

The Akari captain announced her retirement on Wednesday, following the team’s announcement of her promotion to the management and coaching staff.

“After years of love and dedication to the game, l’ve decided to close this chapter. I’m retiring with a grateful heart, proud of everything this journey has given me,” wrote Cobb.

“To everyone who’s been part of this journey, thank you for being family. Love you all so much. Maraming salamat po.”

Cobb started her career as La Salle’s main setter in the UAAP before jumping to the pros in 2022 as one of Akari’s first players when it entered the PVL.

The 5-foot-4 setter was part of the Chargers’ two podium finishes in the Reinforced Conference, where they reached the final, and won bronze in the recent 2024-25 All-Filipino Conference. 

“Volleyball has been a huge part of my life. It’s where I found confidence, built lifelong friendships, and learned to push myself, win with pride, and lose with grace,” Cobb said.

“As I step away from the game, I carry the strength, love, and determination it gave me. This isn’t the end – just a new chapter, written with the same heart that played every point,” she concluded.

Kamille Cal is the remaining playmaker for Akari, which has Faith Nisperos, Most Improved Player Eli Soyud, Fifi Sharma, Ced Domingo, Grethcel Soltones, and Justine Jazareno.

Akari recently let go of Japanese tactician Taka Minowa and promoted Tina Salak as the new head coach.
