MANILA, Philippines—Meralco rookie CJ Cansino may have left his fingerprints all over the Bolts’ dominant win over Blackwater in the PBA Philippine Cup, but the young gun isn’t satisfied
Even after Meralco’s commanding 103-85 victory over the Bossing at Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo on Wednesday, Cansino stressed that he still has plenty of work to do—especially when it comes to consistency.
“I think my problem is knowing that I can do things but I can’t do them consistently,” said a focused Cansino.
“My coaches are helping me, telling me to be a two-way player and they also tell me that my offense is good enough but my defense needs some work.”
The University of the Philippines product made his presence felt on both ends of the court.
Cansino registered 14 points, five rebounds and three assists with a steal and a block on the defensive end to match, pushing the Bolts to a 3-5 record.
However, he was clanking his shots from deep—an area he hopes to improve moving forward–sinking only two of his five attempts.
“Even in practice, I’m not afraid to make mistakes as long as I try to be consistent and hopefully, in the next game, I become more consistent.”
While Cansino was a bit hard on himself, coach Luigi Trillo remained pleased with what he saw out of the sweet-shooting guard.
“I’m very impressed with CJ. He’s always mild-mannered and always smiling. I think he’s too nice,” said Trillo in jest.
“Every time we’re in practice and we teach him, he’s very sincere when he looks us in our eyes. He really wants to learn,” the top coach added.
Cansino looks to show more consistency when the Bolts face NLEX on Sunday at Philsports Arena.
