San Miguel Beer has opted not to lodge a formal protest over the PBA’s decision to call Mo Tautuaa’s dunk as basket interference during Game 1 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals that gave TNT a 99-96 win on Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Team manager Gee Abanilla confirmed on Monday that the Beermen have instead asked for clarification as to why the slam, which in the naked eye seemed harmless, was a violation as far as the league’s technical committee was concerned.

“Basically, the letter of protest is an exercise of futility,” team manager Gee Abanilla told Inquirer through text message. “It pre-empted our argument with their press conference last night.
“We had the letter prepared and signed, but opted to ask for clarification and reasoning on how they called it based on their vantage point,” added Abanilla.
Deputy commissioner Eric Castro maintained that the technical committee made the right call in determining that Tautuaa pulled the rim while the ball bounced in the air that led to the basket with 56 seconds left.

The Beermen took the lead at 98-97, but it was when there were only six seconds to go that the committee had a chance to make a review due to a stoppage of play when a jumpball was forced.
Team governor Robert Non was fuming after the game and had to be restrained after confronting league officials at the technical committee table. Non later contested that Tautuaa made a legal play.
