Ronald Tubid intends to make Terrafirma competitive as he takes on the challenging role as the team’s new coach.
The Dyip tapped Tubid to call the shots for the 50th season after management failed to secure the sale of the franchise to Starhorse and the Zamboanga Valientes in the past few months.
While Tubid, who previously held the roles of team manager and assistant coach, admitted that at least five players are still under contract, he is eager to make do with what he can have, especially with the PBA Rookie Draft just around the corner.
“Di naman tayo sasali sa PBA kung ayaw natin manalo,” Tubid said during Thursday’s Draft Combine at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
“For me, if there’s a chance to get solid players, we hope to maximize whatever we have and try our best to make the playoffs,” he added.
Terrafirma holds the No. 1 pick in Sunday’s proceedings by virtue of winning just three games last season. Juan Gomez de Liano, Jason Brickman, Dalph Panopio, Will Gozum and Geo Chiu are among the projected early picks.
But the possibility of the Dyip eventually sending that pick in the unforeseeable future remains there, given the team’s history of trading promising talent.
In fact, Terrafirma recently traded the rights of returning Javi Gomez de Liano to Magnolia in exchange for Jerrick Ahanmisi and the second round pick in the Draft.
“We’re still undecided, though we already have a list of players who we might select,” said Tubid.
