PBA: Santillan, Rain or Shine look to deny Pogoy like they did Bolick

MANILA, Philippines—Leonard Santillan and Rain or Shine may have an answer in mind to stop TNT in Game 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.

In the Elasto Painters’ 98-91 loss at the hands of the Tropang 5G, one player in the form of Roger Pogoy stood out in more ways than one.

And Santillan knows exactly what his team needs to do–and who to stop–to avoid a repeat of their Game 1 meltdown.

“That’s exactly it. We need to stop Roger and we have a game plan ready for the next game,” said Santillan told Inquirer Sports at Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

Pogoy finished with a red-hot shooting night to the tune of 28 points on a 44 percent shooting clip, always finding ways to nip the Elasto Painters’ attempts at taking over in the bud.

While stopping Pogoy is easier said than done, Rain or Shine may have a proven formula to do just that: treat him like the Elasto Painters Robert Bolick in the quarterfinals.

And everyone saw just how the Elasto Painters fared with a confined Bolick on defense.

“We’ll treat Pogoy like we did Bolick. We need to deny his touches and pressure him. That’s what we’ll try to do in the next game,” said Santillan, who struggled with just five points and six rebounds in the series opener.

Rain or Shine aims to pull it off on Friday for Game 2 at Ninoy Aquino Stadium to sidestep a 0-2 hole in the best-of-seven series.
