The PBA has sought the permission of the UAAP to allow its players to join the Rookie Draft without losing their eligibility in the collegiate league’s basketball season.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial on Thursday said the request was made given that the Draft and the opening of Season 88 will take place next month. He added that the league will allow those selected to focus on their UAAP stints before joining their PBA teams.

The Rookie Draft is set for Sept. 7, 12 days before the UAAP tips off at University of Santo Tomas.

Meanwhile, the PBA’s 50th season opens on Oct. 5 at Smart Araneta Coliseum with the centerpiece Philippine Cup as its kickoff conference.

UAAP players are barred from entering the Rookie Draft before or during the season, which is a stark contrast to the NCAA.

The NCAA, however, prohibits draftees from signing any contract while they are still playing for their schools.

Potential applicants have until Aug. 28 to submit their requirements at the league office in Libis, Quezon City. A Draft Combine will be held days before the proceedings.

So far, no major names have expressed interest in joining the Rookie Draft.
