Rookie Xyrus Torres scored a season-high 28 points in a near-perfect shooting display as NLEX spoiled the PBA Philippine Cup debut of Rain or Shine with a 109-95 victory Saturday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Torres made 11 of his 12 shots almost setting a league record for most makes without a miss as the Road Warriors entered the win column in the all-Filipino tournament after dropping their opening assignment.
Ali Peek still holds the mark by going 11-for-11 in a game in 2006 while playing for Coca-Cola against Alaska.
Robert Bolick had 23 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists while Tony Semerad and Javee Mocon contributed 18 and 12 for NLEX.
NLEX bounced back after its comeback attempt fell short against San Miguel Beer the previous weekend.
The win comes as the Road Warriors look to put the Grand Slam quest of the TNT Tropang 5G off to a difficult start when they meet on April 23 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Torres arguably had his best game for NLEX, which selected the Far Eastern University product in the third round of the Rookie Draft. He made his debut late in the elimination round of the Governors’ Cup after completing his MPBL duties with Quezon.
Rain or Shine lost its opening game of the all-Filipino tournament, a difficult way to begin the quest to improve its three-consecutive semifinal finishes.
Rookie forward Caelan Tiongson posted a season-high on top of 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Elasto Painters in the defeat.
