MANILA, Philippines — The “low-key” Chery Tiggo Crossovers are banking on their ‘we not me’ culture, heading to the PVL on Tour semifinals.
The Crossovers made their PVL Final Four comeback for the first time since the 2024 first All-Filipino Conference, facing the Cignal HD Spikers on Tuesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Chery Tiggo coach Norman Miguel believes they may not have a fancied roster, but the players’ determination to win more than makes up for their lack of star power.
“You know why? Because this is the only thing we have. This is the only thing we can control. We don’t have star spikers from Alas, like the ones playing for the other teams. This is who we are. If we have an [Alas member], it’s Jen Nierva (libero),” said Miguel in Filipino after defeating the Nxled Chameleons, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20, in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Philsports Arena.
“We just work with what we’ve got. These are our resources, and we’ll work hard with them. That’s why I want us to stay lowkey. That’s the principle behind it.”
Chery Tiggo started the preseason with a 3-0 record before missing out on an outright quarterfinal berth with two consecutive losses.
But the Crossovers took down Galeries in the knockout round in straight sets and booted out Nxled.

“As much as I want them to have that mindset of always being prepared and showing up to games ready, I still want us to be a simple, low-key team. But one that plays with focus, intensity, and gives it their all,” said the Chery Tiggo coach.
“My keyword has always been composure. That’s what we always emphasize. It’s better if we come in quietly, focused, so any pressure that might come, we can block it right away. Because heading into the semifinals, the level gets higher, and we need to be able to handle that.”
Third-round pick Renee Peñafiel was a testament to Chery Tiggo’s low-key impressive run, as she emerged as the team’s go-to scorer and proved that she’s the steal of the draft.
“I’m just following coach’s system. As a rookie, I still really have that eagerness to play, and the system really helps us a lot. Coach Norman is also very particular about our recovery, which helps too,” said Peñafiel, who scored 11 points.
“I think each player manages pressure differently, and that’s one thing I’ve learned from Coach Norman, especially now that we’re heading into the semifinals. It’s about keeping composure and bouncing back after mistakes. In our past games, that was a problem, we’d make errors one after another and have a hard time recovering.”
Miguel urges the Crossovers to keep their hunger and grit as they eye their first final since the 2021 PVL bubble, which was won by former MVP Jaja Santiago for the franchise.
“Cignal is already in the semifinals and just waiting. They’re definitely going to fight hard, they won’t let the chance to reach the finals slip away,” he said. “Same goes for us. We need to prepare well and stay focused in the next training sessions, tomorrow and on Monday.”
