Chicago, Illinois — Sprinting from socio-civic work across home-country Philippines, world-ranked polo player Mikee Romero on Monday delivered statement wins in the 2025 USPA Midwest Open with GlobalPort-PFP.
GlobalPort-PFP (Passion For Polo) players American Colo Gonzales, Argentinian Nino Obregón, Filipino-American Anthony Garcia, and Romero combined sharp teamwork with pressure to topple the reigning Midwest Open titleholder Flying Changes.
Flying Changes controlled the early tempo. But GlobalPort-PFP refused to yield. Romero, whose dual role as patron and player in the recently concluded US Open underscored steady on-field contributions, drilled in a crucial goal that lit the comeback spark. Gonzales and Obregón controlled midfield battles, while Garcia’s timely defensive stops blunted Flying Changes’ charges.
Romero made the breaking goal for 11-10 in the deciding minutes.
By the final chukker, GlobalPort-PFP’s cohesion and hustle sealed a narrow but decisive victory that boosts their semifinal hopes.
Flying Changes face Romero’s move, clinching the win by GlobalPort-PFP 11-10 last August 10.
Last August 8, GlobalPort-PFP nearly won against CD Peacock, 13-14 in its first game at the USPA Midwest Open at the Las Brisas Polo Club. The 2025 edition kicked off August 5 and all games up to August 14 are streamed live on Pololine TV. The team plays against Las Brisas on August 14, and Beaver Creek on August 16.
Romero’s GlobalPort made a historic run this year qualifying and reaching the quarterfinals of the prestigious US Polo Open Championship in Florida, polo’s most competitive 22-goal tournament. This momentum has carried into the Midwest Open, where GlobalPort’s competitive edge is again turning heads.

In May, Romero stood at World Rank No. 24, with 110 WPT points earned in that stunning debuut at the 2025 Gauntlet of Polo, often referred to as the Olympics of polo. This feat made him the highest-ranked Filipino in WPT history to become Southeast Asia’s top amateur polo player.
“We keep going. Everyday outlines our purpose,” stated Romero as he continued to put proof to what he referred to as “just a beginning” with those US Open victories. /das
