MANILA, Philippines—The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) isn’t stepping on the brakes in terms of pursuing Bennie Boatwright as a naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas.
SBP Executive Director Erika Dy made it clear on Monday afternoon that the federation is still keen on acquiring the services of Boatwright for future tournaments.

“There’s no changes with regard to pursuing Bennie Boatwright as a naturalized player at the moment,” said Dy during the Pilipinas United 3×3 League presser at Seda Manila Bay.
“We’re just waiting for Congress to schedule the hearings for him.”
The 29-year-old Boatwright’s naturalization began last year but was stalled after the 6-foot-10 forward suffered an Achilles injury.
But if it finally pushes, it’s still uncertain as to when Boatwright will be able to suit up for the Philippines as he’s currently signed with a professional team in Taiwan.

Dy saw Boatwright’s move to play in Taiwan as a positive as far as the logistics are concerned as it will easily allow him to fly back to the Philippines when needed.
“I believe he’s going to be playing in Taiwan now so it’ll be easier for him to come over when he’s called for.”
Boatwright, who played four years at USC, led the San Miguel Beermen to a PBA title in the 2004 Commissioner’s Cup.
