MANILA, Philippines–Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone could only praise the way host Saudi Arabia pushed them to the limit in their Fiba Asia Cup duel that needed overtime to be settled.

The Philippines came up with a 95-88 win at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, but not after a Justin Brownlee game-tying triple late in regulation prevented Saudi Arabia from completing an upset.

Cone gave his flowers to two men that almost put Saudi Arabia to victory in guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and center Mohammed Alsuwailem.

“They were phenomenal,” Cone said. “[Abdur-Rakhman] made shots all-game long and the big guy [Alsuwailem] was dominant. They made it hard for us with their inside and out combination, and we were caught in-between. They posed a lot of problems for us.”

Abdur-Rahkman dropped a game-high 33 points on eight triples, frustrating Gilas with his consistency from long range, whether it was open attempts or contested ones.

Alsuwailem, meanwhile, imposed his presence down low in the second half to produce 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Saudis.

And it appeared that Alsuwailem had put the game out of reach, scoring a basket to make it 77-71 for Saudi Arabia, about 90 seconds remaining, and also picking up Abdur-Rahkman’s airball to make it 79-76.

That put Saudi Arabia ahead with 8.4 seconds to go, but Brownlee came through with his dramatic three that forced overtime. From there, Gilas took over to finally see off the host country.

“By all rights, they had the game won,” said Cone. “Except for [Brownlee hitting] the big shot.”

Saudi Arabia finished the tournament having won two in five matches, which the team could build moving forward with Abdur-Rahkman and Alsuwailem leading the way.
