MANILA, Philippines — Mitzi Panangin came off the bench and provided the much-needed spark for Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday.

Panangin, who checked in the second set, nailed six of the team’s 20 blocks to finish with 11 points and five attacks as the Lady Tamaraws survived hard-fighting Ateneo, 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11, to snap a two-game skid on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

“The game will speed up when we score blocks and it makes it easier for those who are digging at the back when we make a solid [net defense],” said Panangin in Filipino.

The third-year middle blocker was motivated to step up for the Lady Tamaraws, who were coming off losses to University of the Philippines and National University, following a big opening win over the University of Santo Tomas.

‘When we were heading here, even in the dugout, all I was thinking about was that if I get the chance to play, I just want to contribute and make the coaches proud that they made the right choice in putting me in,” said Panangin. “I’m always ready. Whenever I get called, I really prepare myself, and I also focus my mindset, whether I’m playing as opposite or middle.”

FEU coach Tina Salak, who also tried to utilize Panangin as an opposite hitter, is grateful for her longtime player and her willingness to rise to the occasion.

“I also want to appreciate Mitzi because she’s really welcome in filling the gaps that the team needs. Many might not understand, but it’s up to the player to accept that kind of role, that kind of challenge, and it’s also part of personal growth,” Salak said.

“We also teach them to take on bigger responsibilities, especially since she’s in her third year and will be a senior soon. The adjustments we’re making from one position to another are significant. I’m really thankful to have players like that on the team, who are open to adjustments.”

FEU, which is now at 2-2, eyes its first winning streak against winless University of the East on Wednesday and Adamson on Saturday.
